FSc, FA, ICS or ICom: Which 12th Class Program Opens Which Doors

FSc Pre-Medical leads to MBBS and medicine. FSc Pre-Engineering leads to engineering. ICS leads to computing. ICom leads to business and CA. FA leads to law, social sciences and media. Here is a full comparison.

The program you chose for 12th class determines which university programs you can apply to after your result. FSc Pre-Medical is the only route to MBBS, BDS and pharmacy. FSc Pre-Engineering is the route to BE/BS engineering. ICS, ICom and FA open different sets of programs.

FSc Pre-Medical: Medicine, Pharmacy and Allied Health

FSc Pre-Medical students study Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Urdu and English. Total marks are 550 theory plus practicals. The result is checked by most medical colleges as a percentage: your HSSC marks count for 10% of the aggregate for MDCAT-based admission.

After FSc Pre-Medical you can apply for: MBBS (5 years), BDS (4 years), Pharm-D (5 years), BS Nursing (4 years), BS Physiotherapy, BS Medical Lab Technology, DPT and other paramedic programs. All require the MDCAT run by the Pakistan Medical Commission (PMC).

MDCAT minimum score: 55% as of 2026. Your FSc mark, MDCAT score and sometimes matric marks combine to form the merit list. A higher FSc aggregate gives you an edge when MDCAT scores are close.

FSc Pre-Engineering: Engineering, Architecture and Computing

FSc Pre-Engineering students study Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Urdu and English. Mathematics is 100 marks (no practical). This group is the standard entry requirement for BE and BS Engineering programs at public and private universities.

After FSc Pre-Engineering you can apply for: BE/BS Civil, Electrical, Mechanical, Computer, Software, Chemical or Petroleum Engineering; BS Architecture; BS Computer Science or IT (at some universities). The entry tests are ECAT (UET), NUST NET, FAST-NU, GIKI, NED and others.

ICS (Intermediate in Computer Science): Computing and IT

ICS students study Computer Science, Mathematics and either Physics or Statistics as the third elective, plus Urdu and English. Computer Science has a 25-mark practical component.

ICS is the direct path to BS Computer Science, BS Software Engineering, BS IT and BS Cyber Security. Many private universities also accept ICS for engineering programs, though some public universities require FSc Pre-Engineering for BE admission. Check each university's policy before applying.

ICom (Intermediate in Commerce): Business, CA and Finance

ICom students study Accounting, Economics, Business Mathematics, Commercial Geography, Urdu and English. All subjects are theory-only. Total marks are 550.

After ICom you can apply for: BBA (Bachelor of Business Administration), B.Com, BS Accounting and Finance, BS Economics, and later MBA or MS. ICom is also the standard qualification for the CA Foundation program (Institute of Chartered Accountants of Pakistan) and the ACCA Foundation route.

FA (Intermediate in Arts): Humanities, Law and Social Sciences

FA students study Urdu, English, Islamiat or Pakistan Studies, and three elective subjects from Civics, Economics, History, Geography, Psychology, Sociology and others. All subjects are theory-only. Total marks are 550.

After FA you can apply for: BA in any Arts or Social Sciences program, LLB (5-year), BS in Journalism or Mass Communication, BS in Education, BS in Islamic Studies, and many other humanities-based programs at public and private universities.

General Science: Home Economics and Allied Programs

General Science students study Home Economics, Food and Nutrition or another science elective, plus Urdu and English. Some subjects have practical components. This group qualifies for BS Nursing, BS Home Economics, BS Food and Nutrition, and some allied health programs.

Can You Change Your Program After 12th Class?

No, you cannot sit exams in a different group without re-enrolling. If you have already appeared in FSc Pre-Medical, your DMC will show that group. Some universities may allow you to apply for programs outside your group if you meet the credit requirements, but this is the exception, not the rule.

For example, some universities accept ICS students for BE Computer Engineering. Others accept FA students for BS Psychology or BS Sociology. Check the specific university's eligibility criteria for the program you want before assuming it is closed to you.
